Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters
A recent study indicates that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to original mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the way of the injections explains the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
