A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.
A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in public works. They were completed at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
